Singers with Unique Voices: Colette Elyse (The Unique Voices Club #53)

Every other Friday, I write a post about singers with unique voices not commonly heard in mainstream music. My goal? To educate emerging artists, music lovers and musical theatre creators while inspiring them to embrace their own quirks. This week, I'm writing on Colette Elyse.

I sincerely apologize for the fact that any of my more regular readers have waited over an entire month for a new episode of the Unique Voices Club! I've been tending to some health issues, but we're back (and I let you take the reins and share with freedom artists we should be listening to two weeks ago)! I was thinking about which artist we could cover next from my dwindling list of artists I've discovered when I remembered this indie folk artist that showed up in my TikTok feed a few days ago. Colette Elyse is so so so early in her career that she doesn't even have her stuff on Spotify yet. And I love me a baby artist. I haven't been this early to watch someone's career unfold since I went semi-viral covering Bella DeNapoli on YouTube a few years ago. In Colette's recent TikTok video, she provided a whole new perspective on Dolly Parton's "Jolene" by sharing what it would sound like if she wrote for the man they're both pursuing rather than the homewrecker. (Perfect timing too. RIP Dolly.) Watch my analysis below and you'll hear what I mean:

It's Colette's goal to eventually produce her stuff and release it on streaming platforms other than SoundCloud, so go follow her on social media and perhaps fundraise to buy her a good microphone (I can vouch all day for a Rode Nt-1a microphone even if you have an iPad) so that she can get her stuff out there to the world instead of us having to wait for TikTok snippets. And after that Jolene revamp, it's clear she's got something worth saying, if her Tiny Desk submission doesn't say so. I produced all of the songs I have in my public catalog right now using GarageBand, so we're in a time now where authenticity beats AI and indie artists truly hold the future of the arts world in their hands. So go show her (and the other artists I've covered here) some love.
