Every Friday, I write a post about singers with unique voices not commonly heard in mainstream music in an effort to educate emerging artists and music lovers and inspire them to embrace their own quirks. This week I'm writing on Traci Hines/Oden.

Traci Hines (now known by her maiden name Traci Oden) honestly could be cast in the next Disney princess movie. Or some animated Tim Burton movie like The Nightmare Before Christmas since it was her cover of "Come Little Children" from Hocus Pocus that introduced me to her. But mostly as I'm listening to her right now, I believe she could have been the original Snow White or Cinderella back in the 1950s. In fact, her cosplay of Disney and horror characters was what grew her YouTube channel following.
I haven't watched much of the animated Disney since the late 90s/early 2000s (besides Pixar stuff), but Traci's light voice reads well to any kind of fairytale or horror movie character. She can put on a whimsical trill like a Golden Age Snow White (and go through every Disney character's voice through to the contemporary period along with their personalities), or she can go low, whispery and haunting like a witch casting a spell. She's even merged both of these identities, showcasing what horror versions of the Disney princesses would look like. In my opinion though, it's her horror fantasy singing that really shows off the distinct nuances in her voice. It's almost musical theatre-like, not quite classical but more like the talk-singing employed in more contemporary shows like Carrie. In the realm of fantasy shows, Traci sounds like she could be in The Wiz or Wicked.
She hasn't posted on her channel in close to a year, but there's still a variety of her versions of remade live-action Disney characters on it. Not to mention that on Spotify, she spans all sorts of genres besides Disney covers, including a dance song called "The Best Part of a Song" that was released last year. It comes with a music video featuring cosplays of all the Disney princesses. So if that's your jam, go ahead and check her out. And as is the case with all the unique voices I talk about here, go follow her on social media to stay up to date on her endeavors.
And that is that for this week on The Unique Voices Club! And a reminder to sign up for the Patreon so that you have the opportunity to suggest unique voices to me and be a part of the artistic revolution. You won't want to miss out on it!
Stay educated,
Alexia
