Singers with Unique Voices: Weaves (The Unique Voices Club #49)

Every other Friday, I write a post about singers with unique voices not commonly heard in mainstream music. My goal? To educate emerging artists, music lovers and musical theatre creators while inspiring them to embrace their own quirks. This week, I'm writing on Jasmyn Burke of the band Weaves.

Thankfully Spotify does something right for me in terms of generating playlists and suggesting new artists that are similar to what I listen to, even if I refuse to pay money to use it because of the way they swindle indie artists and actually let the Tater Tot brothers have a dangerous red-pill podcast on there. During one of the times I had music playing in the background while I did whatever, the song "Coo Coo" by Weaves came on, immediately making me wish I was on the beach sipping a pina colada in Jamaica. But even better was the voice singing the song.
Weaves is a Canadian indie rock band consisting of Jasmyn Burke, the lead singer, guitarist Morgan Waters (who has appeared acting in several Canadian shows), drummer Spencer Cole, and bassist Zach Bines. The band, whose influences are a mush of a bunch of genres, initially started out in 2012, recording songs from a bunch of files on Jasmyn's phone, and has released one EP and two albums. They haven't released anything since 2018 nor have they even gathered to create new material or record or the like since 2020, so I wonder whether they're on some kind of indefinite hiatus or something. I wish they would release more stuff though. Jasmyn's voice carries some kind of intentional pitch-bending like the reverb setting on the GarageBand musical keyboard, along with the punk-rock energy of Björk and Patti Smith. And like the way I've been listening to the other artists I've featured, it was glorious. We don't immediately know of a lot of artists of color in America that sound like her, so you need to watch the analysis below:
I love the mission behind this project. Hopefully featuring them motivates Weaves to re-band and release something soon. Or Jasmyn releases some solo stuff. So share this post, this website and talk about our mission here at the Unique Voices Club so that more people get inspired to create art on their own terms and indie aritsts get equal opportunity in music and theatre world. If you want to have a hand in future episodes of the Unique Voices Club, you can sign up for the Firebird Flock over on my main website. Not only will you get access to older episodes, but you'll also get access to the Discord-like group where we can share voices that can appear on future episodes and I can shout you out. If you want to be part of the movement, join now.
Stay educated,
Alexia
